Another Year: 2023

Just because a new year has begun, a new post is warranted. I spent Christmas watching the news about Buffalo New York while stranded at my sister’s house in Niagara Falls, New York. I live in Buffalo, but I left Thursday the 22nd to spend Christmas with family. My son had arrived from Florida the day before, after spending the night at a Florida airport. There was supposed to be a huge gathering with families from Buffalo, the Falls, and surrounding areas. The blizzard moved in around noon. My daughter was caught at work at the state hospital, and my … Continue reading Another Year: 2023

The Sign My Daddy Told Me About

After all the warmth. The spring like days in February and March. I knew better than to put away boots and shovels. Everyone knows that there are six more weeks to spring on February 2 whether the groundhog sees his shadow or not. Just count. Still some people were surprised on a warm March afternoon when I said we would get more snow. My daddy told me when I was a kid that winter heads out of town after Saint Patrick’s day. That big or at least ground sticking snow that comes after March 17th is the one that gives … Continue reading The Sign My Daddy Told Me About

Outings With Willie

It has been a long while since I last blogged about Willie. There have been so much going on with him. We took Willie on the bus with his niece La’miya before the weather warmed up and headed for the park. After getting off the bus, we took a detour to the ice cream stand. Willie had ice cream, La’miya watched. (Secret. La’miya did taste ice cream with her mom.) We then walked to the park where Willie and La’miya both got on the swings. Willie watched a couple of guys playing catch. Then he climbed a tree. Back home, Willie … Continue reading Outings With Willie

Outings With Willie

A few weeks ago, my grandson Willie and I went on a fairly long walk around our neighborhood. It was nice and uneventful, and because we didn’t use a bus or other transportation, there was a bit of control. Well, on Monday, we left that control behind. Willie asked to go for a walk, so we did. Our first stop, as usual, was the playground.  He slid, on the slide. Then he wanted to go up to the sky on the see-saw.  Willie wanted to stay on the see-saw, but it was too much sun. I asked him where he … Continue reading Outings With Willie

Etta

I had a dream about my wife the other night. There was a gentle breeze, the scent of Gardenias and she was there. She was not dressed in a flowing white gown. She wore a red and black jersey knit shirt and black slacks. It was the outfit she wore the night she died. She smiled and said, “Old man, it’s time to come home.”  . I did not argue with her. She was right. Two days later I died in my sleep. I was surprised Etta came for me. I’d suffered through the deaths of our oldest son, … Continue reading Etta

Always On My Mind

12 years ago today, my beautiful niece was murdered by her boyfriend’s brother. It was the forth murder involving a family member, in my lifetime. People sometimes ask ‘do you remember what you were doing when…blah blah blah. I remember that day because it was my patient’s mother’s birthday, and I was at work when I got the call.Today brings the memories back of my brother and his ex-wife coming to Niagara Falls to arrange their daughter’s funeral. It brings to mind the trial that my brother could not be a part of, as my sister-in-law traveled constantly from Virginia … Continue reading Always On My Mind

Daily Prompt: Who’s That Lady Near My Granddaughter’s Head?

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “A Moment in Time.” Okay, maybe this is stranger than I thought. Maybe this picture does not want to be shared. I posted this picture, wrote the story behind it, attempted to preview it, and save it as a draft, when the preview didn’t work. What happened? My computer froze. Okay, it’s not the picture. My PC is tired, or rebellious, or just doesn’t get how important this is to me. So, in the post I attempted to publish, I had explained how my granddaughter is angry, and doesn’t seem to be aware … Continue reading Daily Prompt: Who’s That Lady Near My Granddaughter’s Head?
